At a time when anti-Zionist views and anti-Semitism are on the upsurge in Europe and elsewhere, tens of thousands of individuals have chosen to embrace Judaism in geographical areas where it had not traditionally been present. This growth in new expressions of Jewish identity and new geographical regions marks an astonishing transition in the history of religions in Africa and in the history of the Jewish people. The aim of this conference is to continue the academic study of the emergence of African Jewry.

The 2026 ISSAJ conference will convene in Paris, France.
Uganda will serve as a focal point of the conference, while not being the exclusive focus. The aim is to include Uganda within a wider African and diasporic context, recognising both the Abayudaya community and other Ugandan perspectives.

Paper proposals – with a title and an abstract of approximately 250 words – on the subtopics of the conference (see below) are now closed. Each accepted paper will be given 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion.
