Conference theme: From Beyond the Rivers of Cush: African Communities Negotiating Jewish Identities
An academic study of the emergence and growth of African Jewry, particularly in the context of the spread of Jewish identity to new regions and the significant changes in the history of religions in Africa and Jewish history.

This growth in new expressions of Jewish identity and new geographical regions marks an astonishing transition in the history of religions in Africa and in the history of the Jewish people. The aim of this conference is to continue the academic study of the emergence of African Jewry.
The 2025 ISSAJ conference will convene in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, “the pearl of Africa.” Being close to – and even making an excursion to – Jinja, claimed to be the source of the Nile, the motto of the conference is found in the Book of Zephaniah 3:10, “From beyond the rivers of Cush, my worshipers, my dispersed ones, will bring

Paper proposals – with a title and an abstract of approximately 250 words – on the subtopics of the conference (see below) are welcome. Each accepted paper will be given 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion.
