ABOUT

ISSAJ

The International Society for the Study of African Jewry (ISSAJ) is an international community of scholars and students engaged in the study of African Jewry and its diverse cultures, historical environments, religious beliefs and practices. The objective of ISSAJ is to facilitate scholarly collaboration, research and discussion and to disseminate research findings through regular conferences, such as the upcoming issaj conference 2025.

The ISSAJ members are scholars and students in African Studies, Biblical Studies, Jewish Studies, Ethnology, Cultural and Social Anthropology, Modern History,  History of Religions, and History of Ideas. ISSAJ is open to all scholars interested in exploring the diversity of African and African-American Judaism.

The topic of Black African  Jewry is not only restricted to the continent of Africa itself, but also includes Israel, the United States and Europe, where an increasing number of Black communities are professing Jewish identities and practicing Judaism in one form or another.
